save money with these items

We all want to have more money, but many of us focus heavily on getting more money.

Getting more money is great! Don’t get me wrong, but I believe that we all can find ways of decreasing our costs in order to save money as well.

After all, it won’t matter how much extra money you get if you have holes in your pockets!

So, let’s first start by repairing those holes! Here are 18 different things you can do to reduce your expenses.

Summer is quickly approaching and that means…you guessed it, skyrocketing energy costs!

Air conditioners all across this great nation will be on full blast during the next few months, but you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to keep yourself cool.

Fans can help keep you cool without breaking the bank. But I wouldn’t recommend you use fans exclusively though.

The problem with just using fans is that they only move the air around instead of actually lowering the room temperature. While air movement does help your sweat evaporate, keeping you cool, you won’t be cool in 90-degree air no matter how fast it moves!

But if you use a fan in conjunction with your A/C it can work wonderfully while saving you money.

How? Well, keep in mind that for every degree you raise your thermostat, you’ll save about 3% on your electricity bill.

So setting your A/C to a slightly higher temperature (say, 78°F instead of 70°F) while using a fan can, in fact, keep you cool while lowering your energy bill.

2) Cut the Cord

Cable costs are out of control! And many people are choosing to drop cable entirely.

In fact, it’s projected that 50 million people will have cut their cords by 2021!

Even if you still have cable I’m guessing you watch less than 10 channels on a regular basis. But did you know that most of your favorite shows are probably available on Hulu, Netflix or even YouTube?

It’s true!

And for your local channels, you can just buy a TV antenna. No, not the rabbit ears, but a digital antenna.

It’s actually one of the first things I bought when I moved into my apartment. (Just make sure you put it near a window for the best signal.)

With a small investment in an antenna and a streaming service (or two), you can have all of your favorite shows for a fraction of the price of cable.

3) Water Filter

In 2017, the bottled water industry recorded $18.5 billion in sales!

For each and every person who regularly buys bottled water, this represents a significant annual expense. One quick and easy way to lower your expense is to purchase a water bottle with a built-in filter.

Not only will you save money, but you’ll be helping the environment at the same time!

4) Homemade Coffee

I don’t need to tell you that coffee is HUGE!

According to this story, Millenials are spending more money on coffee than on their retirement plans! Yikes!

But you don’t have to go down that route. Homemade coffee tastes just as good as Starbucks (or better if you know what you’re doing!).

Go ahead and get yourself your an espresso maker and you’ll see that it pays for itself in no time!

5) Battery Charger

Don’t throw away money by continuously buying batteries! Why not use a battery charger to get multiple uses out of them?

Depending on how many battery-powered devices you have you could save a ton of money with this a charger. Check it out!

6) Smart Power Strips

A traditional power strip allows you to power multiple items using only one power outlet. But the thing is, devices plugged into a traditional power outlet will keep using energy even when in standby mode.

Now, a smart power strip can detect when devices are in standby mode and will cut off power to save energy. Lower your electricity bill automatically with this smart device.

7) Electricity Usage Monitor

With this little device, you can measure the electricity usage of your devices. Once you pinpoint the biggest electricity hogs, you’ll know which devices to unplug and cut the most power to in order to save the most money.

Remember, knowledge is power. Literally!

8) Electronic Fireplace

Keeping your home or apartment warm costs can be expensive. And if you’re using central heating then you’re paying to heat all the rooms in your home. This could be a waste of money if you only really use two rooms, right?

One solution is to use an electronic fireplace, which heats just the area it’s in. This is great for keeping you warm without emptying your bank account.

And if your home is relatively small (like mine) you’ll find that the heat does actually reach further than just the room you’re in.

9) Kombucha and Kefir

Kombucha and Kefir are all the rage nowadays. Go to the store and you’ll find that pre-bottled fermented drinks are anything but cheap.

But making your own kefir or kombucha is incredibly easy and will save you a boatload of money. If you’re a lover of fermented drinks then I’d recommend giving it a try!

10) Crock Pot

Have you ever come home from a hard day’s work only to realize that you don’t have anything prepared for dinner? That situation leads many to spend a good portion of their money take-out dinners and fast food restaurants.

Instead of spending your money on fast food, invest in a slow cooker and have your meals waiting for you when you get home!

11) Lunch Box/Thermos

Not only do our after-work meals often result in us eating out, but our lunches usually result in us spending money in a deli or at a fast food place as well.

Packing your own lunch can save you quite a bit of money over time as well.

12) Freshness Extender

How many times have you opened your refrigerator only to find that your vegetables have spoiled? When this happens, you’re basically just throwing your money away.

With freshness extenders, you can preserve your vegetables for 2 to 3 times longer! Try it out and start saving your vegetables and your money.

It may take an initial investment, but these 12 items can save you money over time if they’re something you’d actually make use of.

If you have any items that have helped you save money we’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

Cheers!
